Nick O`Teen Posted Jan 7, 2000
But in my real world, I get weekends off (except in emergencies or impending deadlines).
Either that, or I'm in a lot of trouble at work.

Nick O`Teen Posted Jan 7, 2000
I'm single, but I can well imagine what married life can be like (if my married brother is any indication).
Alright then, go off and be silly for a while.
Don't quite understand the 'party inside a whale' comment.
Um...
Big Geordie 103806 Posted Jan 8, 2000
Stay single my friend. Married life is very complicated as well as confusing. It is also expensive. But it does have it's compensations . This party inside a whale was in the H2G2 but on a forum by 'Monsy'I believe. I dont know, I went there to keep her who must be obeyed quiet. It was VERY SILLY. Still I survived. If you wish to look at it find my other halves page 'Mature Student' and click on 'The party in the whale'. You will never be the same again.
I have just arrived home so I am going to have a couple of cans and relax, I shall get back to the subject later. I have also just sent a long email to my cousin in New York. Is that near you?(I know the US is rather large). Talk to you soon.

Nick O`Teen Posted Jan 8, 2000
I'm pretty happy being single, actually. I keep changing my mind about whether or not I'd be happier if I was married. So... I'll probably continue to stay single.
I'll see if I can find Monsy's forum. I hope it's not too big a forum, else it may crash my browser. By the way, New York is about 3800 km away from Vancouver, British Columbia. I'm on the west coast of Canada, whereas New York is a bit south and rather east-ish from here.
Heh heh. The US is large, but Canada is even larger. We just prefer to live huddled along our southern border. We can then drive to the US to get cheap milk, gas, and cheese.
Um...
Big Geordie 103806 Posted Jan 9, 2000
Nice one Sorry about that. The way you were talking I thought you were in the US. Yes I can understand why you all live in the bottom corner, We see on TV the bad weather you have there. If I ever win the Lottery *chuckles*. If Canada wasn't so cold in the winter I could go for a place like that. The peace and quiet out in the sticks would be wonderful.Yes,you stay single and enjoy life
You can do what you want when you want, BUT when something great is happening it is very special to share it with someone you are close to. After my divorce and the way my ex treated me, I wasn't going to trust any woman again.Use them yes but not trust them. Anyway I met the other half on a computer course and we hit it off but held each other at arms length. The inevitable happened and it's the best thing I have ever done. Anyway enough of my moaning. As you probably know we live in Norwich, Norfolk, UK. Its a very pretty part of England but the whole of East Anglia is realy one big sand bank. I'm waiting for it to be washed away in some big storm .
I really enjoy our chats as it gives me a break from the distance learning Diploma course I am ploughing through, There is another year and a half to go yet and I take my first exam in London next month.
Anyway, I have had a good read of the nano subject on the other forum and will answer it soon ( must go back and do some work on the course). It might be better if we transfer this conversation onto the other forum to make things easier ??
Must go for now talk again soon

Standing up for Hudson Hawk
Laurel Posted Apr 14, 2000
I thought I was the only one who liked Hudson Hawk, also, but then I bought it and brought it home, and one of my roommates was beside herself with excitement to see it again, and my bf, who had never seen it, now loves it even more than I do. People don't seem to realize that the movie is *supposed* to be that cheesy.
Also, I really liked Starship Troopers. The first time I saw it I rewound it immediately and watched it again. Some people thing that's odd for a woman to dig such a violent flick, but I also loved Aliens and Under Siege, which have their share of gore.
Another movie I found easily watchable that everyone else hated: Cutthroat Island. That has a reputation as one of the worst movies ever, but I would buy it just to watch a swashbuckling lady pirate. I'm a sucker for a costume movie. I also liked Kull the Conqueror. For me, seeing the dresses Tia Carrere wears was worth the price of admission, (matinee).
You have a lot of great movies on your list. The only ones I really love that you don't have are some arthouse "chick" movies like 'Like Water for Chocolate.' And the only ones you have that I don't care for (those I would consider "guy" movies) are the really sophomoric-humor ones, like Dumb and Dumber, which is on my Top Ten Most Over-Rated Movies list.
Also, you have T2 but not the original Terminator, which is so much better. What's up with that, is it not out on DVD?

Like yourself, I understand that Hudson Hawk is supposed to be as cheesy as it is. It's a great movie, just for the villians and, of course, the scene with the Pope watching Mr. Ed in Italian on TV, and rapping the set with his staff when the picture screws up (very funny).
I have seen Starship Troopers about eleven times now. I have it on DVD and it has (by far) the most amazing picture quality I have ever seen on any DVD. The effects are absolutely seamless. Amazing flick. Some people hate the movie just because they read the book and are ticked off that the soldiers aren't wearing exoskeletal armour like they do in the book (too bad for them, I say).
I haven't seen Cutthroat Island yet, but I've had this recurring desire to buy the DVD. Maybe you've just pushed me enough to actually do so.
Being a single guy, I'm not likely to have such movies as 'Like Water for Chocolate'. However, I have watched such movies (The Piano, for example, although that's not really the same kind of film - I think). It's just that I don't go out and buy them for my collection.
I don't have 'Dumb and Dumber' in my collection. I have never seen the film. Also, notice that I don't have 'Crash'. In fact, I hated 'Crash' so much that I have never seen a David Cronenberg film ever since, nor am I likely to. Maybe it's because he hyped it up so much. If he personally gives me back the money I paid for admission to that wretched film, perhaps I'll reconsider.
I don't have the original Terminator (even though it came out on DVD ages ago) because it was (and is) far too expensive, and has absolutely no special features on it. Also, I don't have Conan for the same reason (but there's a Conan collector's edition coming out soon anyway, with lots of extra goodies on it - maybe the soundtrack will be remastered). If the original Terminator comes out as a collector's edition, I'll definitely buy it.
Thanks for your comments. Perhaps we should start a "Hudson Hawk Enthusiasts" support group.

I apologize. Dumb and Dumber was a poor choice of example. I do realize that it is not on your list. I was just trying to give an example of a certain "type" of film without impinging any specific film from your list.
I am impressed that you have seen The Piano. It was good, but I would not want to own that one, it was rather depressing, I thought, aside from the eroticism. I prefer Like Water for Chocolate because it has a sense of down-to-earth mysticism that I like, and there are some very (to me) funny moments. I also like Bagdad Cafe and Antonia's Line, both might be thought of as "chick flicks" but I thought they were excellent, off-beat films.
I would definitely see Cutthroat Island before buying it. That is one of my rules, I only buy a movie if I know I'll like it enough to watch over again.
About Hudson Hawk, I think that Support Group and Fan Club are both too pathetic. We should start a Hudson Hawk Guilde d'Appreciation. A cheesy title to match a cheesy film!

You have The Phantom, but not The Shadow? The Shadow was darn near as good/bad as Hudson Hawk!
Standing up for Hudson Hawk
Nick O`Teen Posted Jun 6, 2000
I really want The Shadow, and it came out quite a while ago. So long ago, in fact, that the industry hadn't quite decided on any standard packaging. The Shadow came out in a CD Jewel case instead of the now standard DVD packaging. That's the only reason I haven't bought it yet. Definitely a great flik.
"Kind of like... an... "atomic" bomb."
"Hey... that's catchy."
Also, there are some other movies that I won't buy (even though I want them) because they're not released in widescreen. "Babe" is the worst case. It's released in full-frame (4:3) only, AND it's packaged in one of those stupid CD jewel cases. Oh ho, two black marks...
