Lizardy has a badge that says 'I don't do mingers'. I really thought minger was in the realms of popular (widely understood) slang these days, could be an American/Brit problem? Or an age thing? Don't know, and I don't think it really matters very much, given the context I would have thought the meaning was clear enough.

Anyway, Dozdim, Hi and welcome. I'm not sure that this is the best place for this, because it tends to be quite quiet around here. If you want people to vote and to debate on the mingingness of singers and the boringness of their songs it would probably be better to start a thread in Ask H2G2, somewhere that has more people passing through. This type of entry, which I see as looking for interaction and conversation rather than personal opinions, responses and criticism isn't going to gather much comment.

For what it's worth, I think the greatest pop minger these days is Cher. She's scary!

Of course, it is possible, as with the case with conspiracy theorists, that the greatest mingers are those who make lists of them...

Ming is an interesting word. I am surprised it isn't known in Ireland, Gnomon. It is certainly Scottish, and I had always assumed it was Celtic, though of course it could be Nordic. I must ask some Scandinavians whether or not they have a similar word. (Once an obsessive scatolinguist, always an obsessive sctato-f**king-linguist it seems ).

Minge / Minger / Minging
In some usages this rhymes with cringe, in others with singer and singing. This is rumoured to come from a word for female genitalia, and is suspiciously close to the word 'mingy' which is a synonym for and which rhymes with 'stingy'.

To ming (hard g) is to be completely off, like college food: it can also be used to describe rotting dustbins, or just to indicate that something smells. Someone who is a complete minger is someone who is too revolting to consider dating. In some parts of the UK it is not used for girls: in others it is.

This appears to be a Scottish word which has drifted south, getting hipper on the way, and the model Jordan described herself with deprecation but no apparent irony as minging on TV.

Graham Sourness described the referee's performance in Blackburn's 2002 cup tie with Middlesbrough as minging; and a new law that is unpopular could utterly ming, so it seems that some usages are similar to the American usages for suck.

I think the key phrase in the definition is "getting hipper on the way". In Glasgow I heard it used by a cleaning lady about a rubbish bin, and I also heard it used by my thirty-something colleagues about someone best described as mutton dressed as lamb. But in England it seems to be used by media-savvy adolescents and twenty-somethings, rather than by the bookish. I have no idea why I was watching a documentary about Jordan, but that is my clearest memory of its usage on English TV. Most of the rest of the examples of usage came from other younger hipper hootooers.

On a different subject. The AWW is the place for this entry if anywhere is, Dozdim, but you might get a more enthusiastic discussion on <./>askh2g2</.> Most of my successful collective entries (apart from "British Swearwords" in fact) started life in discussions on Ask.

Working on it. Various web citations state that to swiv or swiving is an Old English term for the f verb but they fail to provide a dated reference.

Apparently it is found in the Canterbury Tales, the one with the two Cambridge scholars and the miller's family.
