A Conversation for Talking Point: If You Were Immortal Would You Become A Hedonist?

How would you live if you were told that you were going to live forever? What would change?
Umm, for one thing, I'd probably freak out a little. I would become more lazy, for sure, but I would never become a total sloth because eventually I would hate myself for it. Also, I'd learn every language on Earth, so when new ones occur, I can be all 'I was around when French was being spoken!'.
Oh, now that I think about it, I would totally wait to have a kid. So long as, you know, I didn't go through menopause or anything...

Is it likely will science find a way of permanently arresting the degeneration of human cells?
Permanently? Not any time in the near future(200 years). I definitely think we'll be able to make ourselves live much longer, however.

If given, would you take the option of becoming immortal?
No, but if you gave me the chance to live to, say, maybe 400? I'd probably take it, so long as I was a healthy, active, able-to-take-care-of-myself 400-year old.

If you lived forever would you spend all day and every day in the pub?
No, because I don't drink very often anyways.

Would you shy away from personal relationships? (Too many funerals...)
I think I would let my current personal relationships run their course, then try to kill off my generally friendly personality.

Would Oliver Reed have continued to drink for a million years? Or would he eventually have got bored of it?
Honestly? I have no idea.

Fearless of the consequences (because there are none) would you lose yourself in a tornado of self-destructive, intoxicating behaviour?
I'd probably have some sort of phase.

Is there anything positive about living forever? Do you want to?
Yes, because if you were, overall, a very good person, you would probably do a lot of good for the world. Even if you had some bad moments. No, I don't think I'd want to live forever. Though I might think about it.

Is the fact that we are going to die the single most important aspect of what it means to be a human?
It's up there, all right.
