When potatoes were first brought to Britain, the roots wre thought to be poisonous and were grown only for their foliage. Or so I heard once.

Let's not forget that the potato also has many uses other than as a simple food. They can be used to power digital clocks. (a bit cumbersome as a wrist watch, but still...I hear Nissan is working on a potato powered car... or maybe not.)Then there is the Potato Cannon. Though I doubt NATO will be endorsing it any time soon, outfitted with a spent-uranium casing it can penitrate 2" armor plate. And, of course, for those with an artistic bent the Potato can be carved into delightful nik-nacs. Don't know what to get that special some one for the Holidays? Give 'em a Potato! They'll thank you for it.

Polish people (from Poland not for cleaning furniture) make a particularly strong alcoholic drink from potatoes.
