h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Is there any way of displaying an on-or-offline status on your homepage, which would automatically update when you log on or off, so that visitors can tell whether or not you're online when they visit? For example, I'd like my homepage to say "The doctor is in" when I'm online, and "The doctor is out" when I'm not - or do I have to remember to do it manually every time?

The short answer is there's no way that I'm aware of.

I've been thinking.. it might be a good idea to create a H2G2 program which you can do stuff on or offline, sync up with a Palm Computing device, compose entries as well as an Instant Messaging program like what was mentioned here, and E-MAIL.

Off on an even vaguer topic, is web based e-mail on the list of things to do. It would be great to access it from the goo, and having it glow when I've got mail. You could probably do it so it's U38811@researchers.h2g2.com. What do you think?

I know that h2g2 are pretty keen on WAP capabilities for the site but I'm not sure about PALM etc devices.

There has been mention of some type of instant messages & an h2g2 email addy for researchers but I don't know the current situation.

Yes, we'll be doing h2g2 for palm devices too. We're up with the technology, we're doing deals with service providers as we speak.

Instant messages and email addresses will come, but not right now...
