I like what you've written about the laughing gnome yet I'd feel it remiss of me not to poke in a mention of 'Hunky Dory'. It's a fantastic album full of great ideas. 'Life on Mars', 'Quicksand' and 'Changes' are some of the best songs he's ever written IMHO. And 'Diamond Dogs' where he pretty much wrote and played everything on that album. Plus he helped produce Lou Reed's "Transformer".
Sometimes his failures are as interesting as his successes, but maybe best not mention Tin Machine. Or his acting

He didn't play almost everything on Diamond Dogs, just the lead guitar (first time he'd done that). Sorry.
