in East Germany we used to have a general all-purpose postcard showing the GDR outline on the front (to mark the place you are in) and a list of topics on the back, going something like this:
Dear ...
I am in ...
Accomodation is excellent - does it - poor (please tick)
Food is (see above)
Weather is ...
I am fine - bored - ill
...
Hey, how about that? I liked them.
