If the old aphorism "On the Internet, nobody knows you're really a dog" holds true, chat rooms are also great alternatives to kennels for finding that certain someone. Best to leave out the sex part, though.

You are all right in a way, but sometimes it is worth to be honest. I just found my One-and-Only in a chatroom while talking about pubs and beer. So I think it may work.
