hi there, hope you will help
Leo Posted Jun 19, 2007
Well, that wouldn't work either, for a few reasons:
1. Nobody can put a picture on h2g2 except the Editors, and setting up a separate entry with pictures would be just as time consuming as putting them into the entry in question.
2. Such an entry wouldn't be considered 'Edited' because it wouldn't go through Peer Review or be subbed. Your architecture entry *would* be Edited, because it did and will. Edited entries cannot link to non-edited entries... so you wouldn't be able to link them.
3. It is possible to have too many external links. However, I don't think a link to a single picture made from the name of the each building (eg: Library linking to a picture of the library) would be overkill, considering the circumstances.

ah you have just proved a point, why as the link use to be edited only, isnt that a form of predudice, some people do a good gude but decide it stands on its own merit, and dont go for the edited, why, because they know that anything fom 10 to ive heard 80 links can be added, by as you have said now, have to be part of the edited ones, they are links to another site/guide,or internet page.but as you said the editors are the boss, we have to go with waht they want to get in the edited, and people that arnt or dont have the time to send to edited are out in the cold jim

Leo Posted Jun 19, 2007
Well, the 'Edited' status is a form of quality control. If it wasn't in existence, we'd have a zillion entries containing just the number '42' or 'Mostly Harmless'. By differentiating between the 'Mostly Harmless' entries and the serious entries (like yours), the Editors can present this as a useful reference site. (Relatively speaking.)
so yes, if you haven't got the time to put something through Peer Review, it doesn't matter how good it is, it won't be linked to.
I'm not sure if you're suggesting that people wouldn't want to have their entry edited because of links being added?
I can't see why that would be a problem. Links are pretty standard across all internet pages. They're not there to add to the entry so much as to aid the reader. And the website (SEO reasons). If someone doesn't want links in their entry - well that would be weird.

ah again a glitch
-
if you work out how many edited are done say in six months, as we know,if the internet links are as standard, then it will stand to reason, they will at some time probably go, or be replaced, or the url, as in .org to .gov. but some others wont redirect you.
-
so say a pr as a link they used over and over for ages, then one day gone, do they think blimey its on loads of guides its gone, i wonder how many more a well.
-
there is no way to say, lets contact the researcher and replace the link. so in time the internet ones could go, that will leave the edited guides only.
-
i think its better to say, buildgs, i know i,ll google for what there is, but click the link on the guide and you get one, then off to the next part of the guide your couriosity gone, and so on.see my point. jim

Jim, in h2g2 Edited Guide Entries (EGEs), we generally try to link to other h2g2 EGEs and not to external sites, unless they are 'solid' sites (BBC, British Library, University sites, etc). Also, if you read the Edited Guide writing guidelines, you will see that we are not allowed to link directly to external pictures. All websites have rules. These are h2g2's rules...
Peer Review is a form of quality control, as Leo said, but this is all done by us. We're all volunteers. Any researcher with the requisite skills can apply to become a Scout or Subeditor.
The author of an EGE has recourse to the entry even after it enters the Guide - and that is through Editorial Feedback. I have just gone to EF and corrected my first two EGEs that I wrote.

have ever entered, bradford in the guide search, there is only one guide that it edited, and its on mine lol.not complaining.
-
so all the links on my guide are external links to the internet to the bradford bbc sites.
-
so if anyone deems to write anything on bradford, my guide will be there or the one on the search.the mind boggles jim

Leo Posted Jun 19, 2007
Not sure I followed that either. JIMCRACKER, do try to be coherent. I know digiboxes aren't the best for this kind of thing, but full sentences would make everything go much faster.
Wilma, I heard a rumour that someone does off-site photo hosting for such situations. Wouldn't that count as linking directly to a photo?
hi there, hope you will help
Wilma Neanderthal Posted Jun 19, 2007
You'd need to talk to the eds about that, Leo. Last I heard, DDD was setting something up - but he's just got married and moved to Cyprus, and I haven't seen him around recently.

that was going to be my surgestion next, putting the pics on a blueyonder, fotki, or imageflap, with the link in each section to acsess.
-
the imageflap and upload is good,
-
that means that the pics are mine, on my website to the bbc with a direct link, as in the fotki. jim

Actually, Jim, may I ask you how you got those two pictures on your PS up? Are they in the h2g2 Gallery? The tags say they are not...

imageflap isnt a picture its a link to a web storage for images, in the same way as the fotki, but can be in single form.
-
the upload is also a link method, that can also do for videos, images and audio.jim

Wilma Neanderthal Posted Jun 19, 2007
Ok, Jim. Thanks
I don't know what else you want us to say about the EGE pictures and your PR entry, though...

What GuideML did you use to get those photos in?
(Wilma, what's the view source thingummy for user pages?)

Leo Posted Jun 19, 2007
Jim - any personal album that could disappear isn't good for linking. So Fotki isn't good.
I confess, I linked to a yahoo album for my abacus entry. I don't know what the subbie did with that.

im not in the lib till thursday now, i,ll find a imageflap link so you can see what i mean about linking for a url.just the same as the internet from a website, that can store pics for you.
-
blueyonder as one to, with i think 30 images per site, with a url to each one.if you havent seen the image store one, i cant explain, but it could solve the pics from the internet from a storage of images site.just the same as the urls to websites on the pr.
