A Conversation for The h2g2 Photographers
Volunteer Photographs vs BBC Library
Icy North Started conversation Oct 9, 2006
In the past, the editors provided graphics for the "pick of the day" entries, either commissioning volunteer artwork, or selecting a photo from the BBC library. Those which were not "pick of the day" had no illustrations.
OK, now we're compiling lists of unillustrated entries for which we believe volunteers could provide photographs.
What if there's already a good picture in the BBC library? Presumably we wouldn't need a photo.

Yes, but in the spirit of h2g2 isn't it a bit nicer to have a photo (or picture) supplied by a volunteer, rather than relying on the BBC? Sure the quality may be something more from the archives - professional and so forth, but the charm of having a unique photoggraph (or artwork) to me speaks volumes about the community feeling of h2g2.

Yes, agree entirely, but I'm thinking aloud and want to clarify the process.
1. I share your sentiments about charm and community feeling, but is this shared by the italics? I guess they would only want to take this so far, as they wouldn't want to change the overall character of the guide.
2. In the past an illustration signified that an entry was a previous "pick of the day". If we source photographs for existing unillustrated entries, then I guess this distinction is lost?
3. What happens if we provide a photograph for an existing, unillustrated entry, but there is a better one in the BBC library? Will the editors pick that instead, and if so, wouldn't it be good to know beforehand what we're up against as photographers?
4. And what if the editors don't like the photograph, and don't have another in the library, or if they don't deem the article "pick of the day"? Would they publish the article unillustrated?

I see what you mean I still think the idea of 'pick of the day' will still work as it is only one Edited Entry (the Editors Pick) that gets the picture on the Front Page. It doesn't really matter if the others have pics, the magic of clicking on the link and then finding another picture really makes me grin

There is no Eds 'pick of the day' and hasn't been for a long time. The Entry with a picture (of whatever type) is simply the Entry most suitable for one.

I hope we can trust the eds to tell us if they think the photographer's photograph isn't up to scratch.
