This IS the smiley forum... and yes, they have repeatedly said they have no plans for making any smileys for now. Of course I'm sure the oyster has no plans for making another pearl until that irritating piece of sand gets in.

I realize I'm horribly late, and I skipped from the first page to the last, but between hardbacks and paperbacks, give me hardbacks every time. They stand up much better in my household. Paperback covers are lucky to last fifteen minutes in my daughter's hands. Mistreat a hardback belonging to me and you may well find an old-fashioned ruler-against-the-knuckles very quickly.
I remember when finding a fiction hardback was nigh impossible, so don't get me wrong, I've done my share of curling up with a good() paperback. For that matter, I guess when curling up is your intended goal, a paperback can't be beat, but I'm one of those rare curiosities who both collects -and- reads books, so give me a good leather-bound HB with fine pages. Just don't anyone else touch.
Oddly enough, the first hhgg book I read had dolphins on the cover (can you guess which one it was ?), and though I now know what smiley is being talked about (I've seen it here and there), I don't remember ever seeing one on my copies of the books. I agree to the theory that it must be a relatively new design. I thought at first it might be a UK/US thing, but as I'm in the US, I doubt it. I think it would make a very nice smiley. As for the , why not . (Even more than the smiley, I'd rather have the thumb!) [As a completely off-topic aside, I'd rather have a then a <[eureka]>.]
PS Nice particle theory, btw. (grain of irritating sand)

PPS Why is the suggestion box sealed, btw?

They stopped taking suggestions for new smileys well over a year ago. The last batch they came out with included and . The people in charge said at the time that there were no current plans to make anymore smileys (as you can see from the original announcement from which this thread arose). Since then (last September) the h2g2 staff was cut making the likely hood of new smileys even more remote.
But hey, even though they have spake "no new smileys" and "Hey, it's probably copyrighted anyway, so there", we the ever vigilant remain here to proclaim our quest for our smiley.

Utterly random comment here:
This is one of the best causes I have seen on H2G2 and probably one of the few that are actually useful (we point at the Sporkites and the like for examples of ick).
Well done.

Autumn 2004, a year on from the last Smiley Collection, having now well and truly gone, would anyone like to make predictions for Autumn 2005?

how do you get a bloomin' sausage in Autumn? Plant it in the Spring?

Nono, sausages work on the same principle as the pocine population from whence they sprang. thus it is not 'when' you plant it, but what you put into it that counts. Thus to get a suitable bloom in autumn, you can plant it quite close to the time of harvest, provided there is plenty of garlic swill within.
