Well, progressive rock does have many sub genres. I take it you're saying that progressive metal is a sub genre of earlier metal? Interesting point. We'd have to take that on a case-by-case, album-by-album basis. For example, some of the stuff by Starcastle and Dream Theatre might be classified as progressive metal, but I would still classify them as progressive bands.
I'd like to hear what you would consider are the primary characteristics that took a song from progressive to progressive metal or metal to progressive metal (answer both, please).
