Well you seem to be using a much more intelligent approach in defining 'progressive' music than record shop managers do.
If you see a rack labeled 'progressive' it is usually just triple albums by bands from the early-to-mid 70's with tripped-out artwork, twenty minute drum solos and the odd lyric about faeries
Using your wider definition (although you don't state it, I'm assuming you mean artists attempting to 'progress' music in some way) I suppose I'd add Soft Machine,Zappa,Beefheart,King Crimson,Kate Bush,Underworld,The Cardiacs,Mansun,The Orb,Hawkwind,Ozric Tentacles,Butthole Surfers and Sonic Youth. Maybe all the great Krautrock groups to - from Amon Duul and Can all the way through to Neu,Faust and Kraftwerk.
BTW I assume this article is work-in-progress so I'm just chipping in...
