Gandark enters holodeck 82, hoping to talk to the ship's new holographic crwe member for a bit.
[Gandark] hello? you in here?

Yes.
How may I help you?

I am thinking of Gerardi's first conversation with Data as I write this, though of course the situation is much different in this case
[Gandark] Well ... you are a holographic crewman and I am the ship's holodeck maintenance crewman. It seemed logical that we should talk and perhaps come to some arrangement as to who's repsonsible for what in reguards to holography on this ship. I'm wondering what, if any, "special needs" you might have from my department, and basically what makes up your existence. Because if anything ever goes wrong with you ... you know, like, if you ever become incapacitated, guess who they'll ask to fix it? Me.
[Gandark] I don't mean to invade your privacy - but I'd say that ethically, this line of questioning is the same as a biologically-constituted new crewman having to take a physical. I am also curious ... if you don't mind my asking ... whether the Federation considers you a citizen, or even an individual. (with the individual rights that implies)

Um... I'm not sure.
I'm technically not a 'species' in the federation, but I guess they might consider me a citizen.
Of course, I am dead, so that does bring along certain problems in talking to people normally....

Well, why do you think I'm a hologram?
I used to be alive, but I apparently gave up my life to save this ship. That's what I was told, anyway.

[Gandark] Well, I've heard of some holograms who had completely different situations. (like the USS Voyager's Emergancy Medical Hologram) Well, what is it that keeps you ... going?

I dunno...
The thought of helping, I guess.

no, I meant in a technical way
like, the EMH from Voyager had this mobile emitter thing - do you have one of those, or are you being run by the ship's computer or what ?

Oh, I see.
A Positronic Slowboat Orbitromicon Pfrinceski Crystal Matrix.
It's like a battery and computer combined.

So, you have a crystal that is like a battery and a computer combined. whatever, the sci-fience of it doesn't matter of course, but the basic principle and what-your-system-depends-on-in-order-to-work does
so if I'm getting this right, in principle, it's just like the Voyager EMH's mobile emitter, and it keeps working even when the ship's systems aren't, but it can go bad even when the ship is fine, because it's a totally seperate system. that's good to know

[Gandark] OK, do you know of anything that might cause it to malfunction and what do we do if it does?
