A Conversation for How to Sort Out Volunteers

Wonderful, funny article. Volunteers are much more likely to be a curse than a blessing. I have actually fired them on occassion, which is tricky, but in each case they refused to become annoyed enough to leave on their own.
The volunteers I hate the most are the ones that come from the honors program at the high school. They are required to do so many hours of community service to qualify for an honors diploma. But they have to spread the hours ourt over several agencies/charities. This means I only have them for a few hours and poof, they're gone. So I never have one long enough to do much more than show them what a task involves.
As to ways to cheese off my adult volunteers, I ~always~ mispell their names on their name badges. And if I have one I really want to quit, I put them inventoring the items in the early childhood development kits. Nearly all of the lists have items included that aren't actually there. Drives them crazy hunting through other kits to try and find the missing pieces.

Cheers Hyp .
is right - firing, miss spelling names, impossible-to-complete tasks?! What about overlooking long-service badges? That's a good'un too.
Coincidentally I had a long chat with Bill today. After ten years we rub along ok. I love his suspicion of anything remotely new-fangled. Like calculators .

Go Bill! Whereas I am clearly addicted to my PC, I wish it were otherwise. When I think of all the things I could accomplish and enjoy if I didn't spend so much time online, it rather boggles the mind.
Long-service badges? We're supposed to give out long-service badges? Cheesy Christmas gifts is a disappointment to them, also.

LLLwaz ,
Well that gave me a good laugh! Anyone who knows me will guess why.
So it must be all the fault of the likes of you then?

Yep, all my fault .
Actually ... I sit on both sides of the fence. I have been 'done to' on most of those things myself.
This December I'll have done twenty years' worth of the most long running volunteering. The doubling the work load without notice - that was that one.
I meant to come back to this sooner to say 1) Bill can add up a page of figures just by looking at it.
And 2) did either of you read footnote three - cause if so I'm chucking gauntlets around .
