Good entry
browsers corporate theme --> browser's
All the browsers you mentioned load the icon for every visit to the site as it is displayed in the address bar next to the URL once the site has loaded.

That change is made Alex.

Do they? I'm on IE 6.0.2900.2810 and they don't appear in that at the first visit. It's only if I bookmark something that the icon appears. I've seen somewhere on h2g2 where some lovely folk will test configurations in all different browsers for you. Damned if I can find it now I need it...

Well I've got Netscape 8.1, Internet Explorer 7.0.5450.4, Mozilla 1.7.13, Firefox 1.5.0.6. and Opera 9.01 and they all show the favicon in the address bar - so all modern versions of browsers then.

Thanks for the enlightenment DDD
My favicons no longer appear in the address bar, (It's just the blue "e" for explorer now) but in the toolbar just beneath it, sandwiched between Yahoo and Google logos. At the moment it has a BBC favicon then BBC - h2g2 - Post to a Conversation

I think this is a good entry too.
Just a few suggestions:
The entry name may be better as Favicons as the .ico just indicates the filetype as icon (worth mentioning in the entry, but not sure about it in the title).
I have seen animated favicons... don't know whether it's worth mentioning that, or perhaps we'd do better to surpress the concept and hope it doesn't take off (they're rather irritating).
You could make reference to the BBC one as that shows on this site.
Some hosting packages do not allow access to the root folder of the web server - there is a work around: using a tag in the web pages to point to it's location. Let me know if you want the full tag syntax.

Ah - yes, if you have it set to clear history etc I think it deletes favicons as well - either that or it just does it for fun. If you can, get it updated to IE7 - if not, get Firefox

I've implemented the following changes after helpful suggestions.
Alex - Noted that all browser versions now load the favicon upon visit.
Scrumph - Title changed, animated icons included, BBC example covered, dealt with access to root folder problem.
Steve-paul - Mentioned in a footnote that clearing the cache deletes stored favicons.
