If the Pope spoke Greek (or studied the Bible, but hey, let's not go nuts) he would find that the word Hell simply means grave, ande is therefore neither a burning place of torment or some metaphorical thing. If you're in Hell then you're dead, and vice versa. It's as simple as that.
