Thoroughly enjoyed reading this, Langsandy - very descriptive prose.
This quinie recognised a lot of places you mentioned - albeit from the perspective of a few decades later.
I think the sanatorium in Countesswells Road was later known as The Convalescent - and became The American School in the 70s.
I remember playing in those same beech trees at Hazelhead - the barbed wire had gone by then so wir breeks were safe.
My family were fishermen in the Broch at the end of the 19th century. I don't think any of them were as well travelled as the chap you described - but a lot ended up in Canada.

i can't figure out how i just came across this but
am glad I did not miss you - the chap, [my father]
ended his days on one of the two research trawlers
out of Torry and often ran for the Broch - a great
harbor to ride out a noreaster - cheers
