A Conversation for Miscellaneous Chat

Unconfused but still perplexed

I love this place and hate it at the same time. "Simple UI" isn't simple if it does counterintuitive things to the user.

I think I've found the button to press to add a discussion to the "dont panic" page.
I'll find out after I post this message and see where it goes.

The magic button that actually works to add new discussions to a page apparently hides down at the bottom of all of the
discussions - not on the page itself but on the 2-part discussion page you can only get to by clicking on the text that
says "Click here to look at all conversations"

It seemed to me that the "discuss" button in the gooey area on the left could do one of two things,
either which is more intuitive than putting entries into the user's journal.
1) take the user to the "all discussions about this page" page
2) take the user to "add a new discussion" - *For That Page* not anywhere else.

Instead, the "discuss" button put my entries into my Journal, on my home page.
This makes no sense to me; no-one's going to discuss them with me over there, since they don't get seen by anyone.

SO... I have (1) bug report for h2g2 in general [other than this one]
...and (1) content suggestion for the don't panic page
...hiding over in my Journal. Please, administrative people in charge of fixing things, take this message,
and those journal entries, to heart.

Regards,
-Smalltalk4ever!

...the above message showed up in BOTH my journal AND on the "Dont Panic" page.
The other two posts I mention therein [resulting from "discuss" not "add new discussion"]
however, show up only in my Journal and not in the "Dont Panic" discussion list.

So, I guess I'm "Still Confused AND still perplexed"...

I can see where you're getting confused.

Your user page has up to four sections below the actual page that you can edit. These are:

* Journal: This will show any postings you make to your journal, and indicate if there are any replies.
* Forum postings: This is beside your journal, so I can see how you're confused. This keeps track of your postings to forums, and shows whether anyone has replied to them, allowing you to easily see if you've had an answer without having to re-read all the forums.

* Your pages. These are any pages you create, on any subject you desire.

* Your Guide Entries. These are pages which have been selected as official Guide Entry status. They might have been edited by our editors, and they might even be combined with information from someone else's pages, but if they were based on a page you wrote, they will appear here.

So you see that when you press the Discuss button, what you post is not going into your Journal it's going into whichever forum you posted into. Only clicking the 'add a new journal entry' button will let you add a journal entry.

I hope this has cleared up some of your confusion. We're constantly looking for ways to improve the interface, and your comments will definitely contribute to that process.
