Hi Mouse!
As you know, I loved this entry because it is so close to my own hickified roots. As for spelling and grammar, I think you want to have a space bewteen "Hill" and "Billy" in the "distinct varieties" part of the entry, otherwise it was fine. I'd like for you to give more information about their habitats however (concentrated in the mountains of Apalachia, but know to range further afield or something like that). Overall, a funny and enjoyable read .... I'll give it a 7. smiley - smiley

Very nice article, and good choice of organization scheme. I'd give it a seven as well.
I found an incorrect word choice in the first paragraph...you say "content" when I believe you mean to say "continent."
My only suggestion to improve this article would be to add a little something to help the reader distinguish the difference between a hillbilly and a redneck. From my own experience, there certainly is a difference.

Hmm.. You're probably right about the Hill [space] Billy thing... Good catch, thanks. smiley - winkeye

As for the location, the "head for the hills" region -is- the Appalachians.. isn't it?! smiley - winkeye

From memory I believe you are right about continent... I'll check it out, thanks!

I agree that hillbillies are not -necessarily- rednecks. Many are, of course, but then.. many cowboys are rednecks, as are many businessmen, rodeo clowns (which are not necessarily cowboys), computer nerds (though this is probably the rarest breed of rednecks smiley - winkeye), housewives, lawyers and republicans. smiley - winkeye

The trouble is, there are probably as many definitions of rednecks as there are regions where they exist (there are regions?!?), and therefore that definition is beyond the scope of this article.
However! If you (or anyone) would care to write up a good article on Rednecks, I would be happy to point readers in that direction. In the meantime I might add a notation to the effect of "not to be confused with Rednecks" ... would that suffice?

Okay... I have made the two grammatical changes and await more discussion on the Redneck issue. smiley - winkeye

Just as in redneck, hillbilly is one word. Don't take my word for it, take Merriam Webster's.

I know this. smiley - smiley I laboured over that decision when I made the page. The title remains Hillbilly, but the point I think that was being made was the fact that Mountain William and Stump Jumper (in the categories sections) were two words, so Hill Billy should have been separated there, too. I'll see what the rest of the crowd (if there is one) has to say on the subject. smiley - winkeye

Thanks for your input! smiley - winkeye

Could be, I've never heard of it before....

But I was once accused of being a "flat-lander" by a Stump Jumper in a truck without a bed (no joke)!

*Chuckles* ... These days a lot of hillbillies (of all varieties) are Flat-land Touristers. smiley - winkeye

Maybe an alternative title would be "Billys Who Live On Hills"

I enjoyed the article but wondered if it was not a bit too Americacentric. (Good word that). The Poms have travelers masqurading as gypsys. Aussies and Kiwis have bums impersonating humans.

These Williams are everywhere.

Which is why the article states that they can be found almost everywhere now. smiley - winkeye

As for it being to 'Americanized' (my word smiley - winkeye), there are many customs here on this little planet... some quite similar, some vastly diverse.  A traveler visiting here needs to be aware of these customs if they are to survive. smiley - winkeye

Thank you. smiley - bigeyes

Hey mouse!

Personally I give you article (like almost everyone else) a 7. Since the corrections, I see no flaws. On the content side of things, it's quite funny. I was never aware of the different sub-species of Hillbillysmiley - smiley.

As for the Hill [SPACE] Billy thing - keep it that way. It makes sense considering the other two varieties.

Ok. That was my contribution to this great work!

The Dancing Tree

Be careful with observational humour - it can be seen as insulting rather than fun. Despite being an advocate of irony, dry wit and sarcasm, I feel that this article steps a little too close for comfort at times, most notably during the first paragraph. I know "Semi-humanoid species" is meant to be taken in jest, but I don't think it works.

The section on the "three varieties" is much better. However, I would tend to write it rather than use bullet points - it gives the article far more substance.

Thank you for taking the time to look. smiley - smiley

Yeah, though I enjoy<? smiley - winkeye> the honour of counting hillbilly as part of my genetic upbringing, other readers might not know that, so you're probably absolutely right about the semi-humanoid part.

As for the bulleted lists... I had it the other way at first, but to be honest, it just looked ugly. I was looking for some means of organization. It just seemed to fit better in lists. I thought the bars would probably be -too- much separation, though the subheader<? -- I'd have to look that one up again> might be okay... It's just that the bulletted lists seem to bring each section into a common order... When I have time I'll zap it into my recyclable and see what I come up with. smiley - winkeye
