I've just realised a line about Portsmouth being the birthplace of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Charles Dicken and Peter Sellars has gone walkabout from the entry (probably while I was wrestling with the GuideML!) - should I add it in? While there is an edited entry on Portsmouth, it is lacking a few odds and sods, but wasn't sure how much "city" to put in an entry on the "uni".

Help!

Good entry! I see you left my brother out of the famous alumni smiley - laugh (well, I've heard of him smiley - erm)

I'd be inclined to describe Portsmouth in no more than one or two sentences if it's not the subject of the article. Any parts of it popular with students obviously deserve a good treatment, though.

I'm currently trying to pull together a Hampshire entry, and I'll probably add a couple of sentences on Portsmouth in there, as it will be a section heading.

The famous residents probably belong in the entry on Portsmouth itself, which I guess we'll both be linking to.

Good luck!

Thanks IcyNorth... apologies for missing your brothersmiley - doh how could I? smiley - winkeyesmiley - biggrin

You're probably right about leaving off too much detail about Pompey itself, I was just miffed that the text had gone walkabout. Give us a shout if you need a hand on the Hampshire entry.

This is looking really good, Rockhound.

I agree it would be interesting to know a little more about Portsmouth.

Now, as I don't know much about the university I'll engage in a bit of pedantry! smiley - ok

1960's - 1960s

'Pugwash', as a newspaper title, should be italicised.

I think it'd also be really useful to prospective students to have some info on Entry Requirements, if possible.

Nice work!

smiley - cheers

smiley - ta Natalie.

I've changed those typo's, and added a paragraph on the entry requirements - I kept it fairly vauge though, hope that's ok?

Still undecided about the extra bits on Pompey itself... anyone else have an opinion on whether I should expand more on the city?

Right... I've expanded the accommadation section (having read the Birmingham Uni one, I decided mine was a bit abruptsmiley - winkeye ) What do you think?

At the moment I'm resisting putting too much detail on the city itself in as I feel it'sd be better of in the Portsmouth entry, but to be honest that could do with an update or revamp as a lot of what I'm leaving out isn't in that entry either. Sooo... what do the good citizens of hootoo think?

At one time the Polytechnic had a very good chemistry department. I disd my (part-time) chemistry degree there. At the time, they did a lot of work on corrosion science involving the Mary Rose, and dendrochrronology etc etc.

Not him

the bus system (generally) covers most of the main areas.

this seems clumsy somehow, could it be contracted?

locals and students and Navy and locals

Capitals? and could it be contracted to "Locals/Students and Navy/Locals"? otherwise it might be missed.

That's all the nitpicks I can see, and they really are picky. Great entry, wish I'd applied there.

Ref 'The Chemistry Department was involved with studying artifacts from the Mary Rose', I think you should say something about the Chemistry Dept being no longer extant. It closed somewhat more recently than 1993, because the following is an HEFC Report dated 1993 which rates Chemistry overall as being satisfactory:

http://www.qaa.ac.uk/reviews/reports/subjectlevel/q101_94_textonly.htm

(This could be put in the context of moree recent Chemistry Dept closures e.g King's College, Lobdon (how many Novbel Prize winners), Aattempted closure of Chemistry at Univ ofd Sussex (2 NP winners including Prof Harry Kroto - Buckminsterfullerene, Univ of Exeter... These closures/attempted closures are a nationalk disgrace!!!smiley - grr

I've changed it, while keeping the (entirely justified IMO) rant about cutting back of chemistry departments relatively small - it's not really the focus of the entry, and there are other subjects Pompey doesn't cover, after all smiley - smiley

Any good?

Yes, that's fine - it's about the length that I hoped you would put in. I wasn't expecting you to emulate my lengthy rant smiley - smiley
