Good stuff Marv - I had heard about this from a co-worker who used to live in Utah (A suburb of SLC, although I can't remember which one).

Now... just so I have my facts straight, the difficulty of getting alchohal is due to the Mormon nature of the state, right?

If you asked the government they would deny that, but the department that controls alcohol here in Utah has 4/5ths mormons on the board and no one that represents any resteraunts or bars or clubs. It is against the charter to have them represented at all. The state controls all hard alcohol sales through the state owned liquor stores. They are inconvenient to get to and over priced. And *any* alcohol that has over 3.2% alcohol by weight has to bought at a liquor store. No vote would pass that loosened the rather restrictive laws because the voting population has enough Mormons to kill anything that might come up. I wish that what I said in my entry was fiction, but it can be more convenient to go to Nevada to get your booze simply because you can never make it to the state liquor stores during their hours. Some communities will not allow bars or restaraunts to come into their neighborhood. The laws make it hard to go to the pub casually, and their can be only so many bars in a given stretch of road. I think that this encourages drunk driving, especially because you cannot hail a cab in SLC (also against the law). Over all I think that the state would gain more revenue from taxes than by the sales from the liquor stores if they opened the market. Again this is a public service for anyone coming to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

I can understand the alcohol, but why the cabs?

I don't know. But the only place you can hail a cab is at the airport or a special section near the convention center.

If you are flying over Utah you can't buy a drink from the flight crew until you get over another state.

no, kidding smiley - smiley

This one is true. When you take the bus to Wendover Nevada, you can play bingo on the way but they have to wait till you get over the border to give you your prizes. Don't ask me I don't know.

My younger brother was sent to SLC for a month on business and he had the *worst* time of his life! And I seem to recall Dennis Rodman complaining about the state a few years back when the Bulls were playing the Jazz.

It's nice to know that there are a few places on earth more restrictive than Pennsylvania when it comes to alcohol sales. [1]

Good entry, but could do with a bit of organizing and I think it could be Approved by TPTB! smiley - smiley

[1]In Penna., you can drink what you like in bar or tavern but for take-home, only beer can be bought outside of state-owned Liquor Stores. In a bar, you can buy beer two 6-packs at a time to take home. Or you can go to a 'distributorship' where you can buy beer by the case or keg (but no 6-packs). For wine and stronger spirits, you've got to go to a 'State Store' which all close at 8 p.m. on weekends.
