" I wasn't referring to social democrats and well you know it. Rather I was thinking of Russia, China, North Korea, Cuba etc etc."
Your exact quote:-
"I am not surprised. The most intolerant parties worldwide are those of socialist persuasion."
Well I am sorry I dont see how these two are logically connected Novo. I describe myself as a "Socialst" though perhaps I am more of a "Social Democrat" really.... depends how you look at things.
Are you really saying that those countryies you mentioned are any more intolerant that the many far right dictatorships?

And me. I realise that mine and Novos dispute on the "Postal Strike" thread has spilled over into this one.

I think so, since I was replying FB, but I admit that I digressed into another 'area' by trying to point out that a two sided argument actually had three sides, the right one being somewhere between the protagonists.
Apologies though for topic drift, a right usually given only to the theists and athiests, unless you count the thread about the firemen which drifted remarkably quickly into what they were 'watching' rather than what they were doing.

Yes your topic drift was rather strangely abrupt Novo. I thought maybe you were trying to change the subject?
Apparently its just been announced that Labour is to drastically raise the level for when inheriatance tax is liable. I think that might be what's called 'stealing Tory's clothes'. I should imagine they are fuming.
Makes sense though. If both parties are more or less fighting over the centre ground, it comes down to who you trust most to run the country. On Newsnight last night they said that despite this whole fiasco over the 'non election', Labour are delighted that they forced the Tory's hand in saying what would be in their manifesto. So now we can just steal all their clothes.
Politics really is about who can best play the game.

If they 'steal' much more I might be tempted to vote for them, once I have forgotten Iraq and Afghanistan.
It might be amusing to you Fanny, but do you reaaly want 'Tory' govt?, because it seems that you are getting one.
Apologies for the abupt topic change yesterday - I think I explained it.

The furthest left journalist I read regularly is Johann Hari in the Independent. He is always well researched and opinionated. As you can imagine he is less than enamoured with New Labour's Conservative policies.

Yes, Soames snobbery towards somebody who wasn't born to wealth and had to work for a living was really amusing wasn't it

The National Union for Seamen, of which Prescott was a representitive, was arguably the main reason the British Merchant Navy declined due to lack of conmpetitiveness. Also work, politician, steward are rare bedfellows.

Let me give you an example of how effective strike action can be. I think the last time the NUS went on strike I was working in the North Sea. We were tied up in Aberdeen waiting for our next charter. The NUS called a strike and ships with NUS seamen on board stopped working. One of them was just up the coast in Peterhead. We sailed to Peterhead, tied up alongside the strike bound ship and the dockers offloaded her cargo onto us.
We kept the charter long after the NUS had decided to go back to work.

Replying to your post 66 Novo, I must say I'm feeling far less amused by the 'clothes stealing' than I was yesterday. Last night I saw the pictures from parliament when Alistair Darling announced the budget stuff. What disappointed me was the way Gordon Brown was shown grinning like an idiot and finger pointing towards the Tory front bench, presumably in responce to some of their jeers and comments. This is no way for a PM to behave. He should have remained calm and statesman like, ignoring their schoolboy yaboohs. Yes I'm suddenly really starting to worry about him, if he just carries on being apparently so reactive to whatever the Tories get up to. And yes people know its clothes stealing, but so what? Labour naturally want to stay in power, any govenment would. But you don't need to demonstrate it so blatently to the public, as if all you are doing it for is put one over on the Tories.
And there is a clear difference in what Labour are doing. Some other of their policies that they have apperantly stolen from Tories, they are using to fund public services rather than reward the richest people in the land with some tax cuts as the Tories suggested. Gordon should be emphasising this in a positive way. Tony would handled all this far more impressively.
Come back Tony, all is forgiven.

Fanny,
I'm afraid your man got a drubbing at PMQs by Dave. Quoted his own book, Courage, back to him. Brutal.

He's suddenly no longer *my* man WA.
I'm already fantasising about David Miliband being our new leader.
Oh well at least politics might suddenly get more interesting again, now that Tony is no longer around to wipe the floor with Tories, as he's done for the last 10 years. I suppose its a bit like what's happened in F1 now that Shumakker has retired.
