As someone who's wanted to write an AI 'chatterbot' since I knew of their existence, I'm up for this.

PS - any other non-language-specific techniques you use for it would be appreciated, if you can divulge. 
I'm very intrigued by how some AI bots I've seen work.

I can explain after its marked - if I give it out before then someone might find the ideas floating around here and accuse me of plaugerising myself!
Its not going to be too sophisticated but it should be ready in a couple of weeks.

I suppose I can gleam a bit using just common sense for the time being by analysing AIML files from the Pandorabots [http://www.pandorabots.com/].
