Actually, it's funny: we decriminalize marijuana (soon) and criminalize tobacco (gradually). We Canadians are just wacky aren't we?

Here is the main part of the Anti-Smoking By-law passed here in Winnipeg.
"In this by-law Enclosed public place means any part of an enclosed place to which members of the public have access, including, without restricting the generality of the foregoing,
any part of,
an office building, retail store or other commercial establishment, or common areas of a residential building or shopping mall, health care facility, day care or nursery, eductional institution, restaurant, elevator, pedestrian walkway, corridor tunnel or bus shelter.
A person who contravenes a provision of this By-law is guilty of an offence and is liable on summary conviction to the following penalties:
First offence, to a fine of not less than $100.00
Second offence a fine of not less than $200.00
Third offence a fine of not less than $300.00"
Here is where they got really creative
"A decision of a Court that one or more of the provisions of this By-law are invalid in whole or in part does not affect the validity, effectiveness or enforceability of the other provisions or parts or the provisions of this By-law."
So basicly they are saying that even if a court finds it is an unjust law and stikes down part of it they will still be able to charge you under a differant part of it.

Mikey (playing 's advocate) drew a parallel between nicotine addicts and asthmatics as both having medical conditions that affect interactions in public and who may or may not deserve priority.
I would like to point out that the addict's addiction is self-inflicted and, as such, should put the burden on the addict to remove him/herself from harming another.
I wonder how smoking asthmatics cope.

Who keeps saying that if I (well non-smokers and me by extension) should avoid places where people smoke? As far as I can tell that would involve not leaving my house.
No I don't think the laws have gone to far I still maintain that they have not gone far enough. If I wondered about the street swinging a ball and chain about my head because I found it amusing I would be arrested before I got far on the grounds that its dangerous to others. Whats the difference?
As for stirring up trouble I was speaking to Kerr and Pastey before I started this thread and was warned in no uncertain terms that it would be liable to kick up a sh*tstorm. Now if other people would stop taking credit for my carefully contrived violence I'd be apprichiative

Speaking of AI did you know that I have a colleauge who tested a lot of AIs online. Basically an adaptation of the turing test for online use. The only one that passed was designed specifically to flame anyone who spoke to it - people got emotional enough that they didn't spot it was a machine with a lower iq than the average monkey.
I'm quite sure I don't know what made that little event come to mind. One of my favorite lines - and I can't remeber where I heard it: (If someone can tell me I'd be greatfull) "A fool learns from his own mistakes, a wise man learns from other peoples"
I have no intention of getting into a flameing row over this. Though I am happy to argue (argue: to persuade or debate by means of reason) If you want to go off topic that is fine but create a new thread to do so.

*sigh*
Thats the first bit of moderation thats been done on the forum. I like people to be able to speak their mind without being cencored, I was really hoping I was going to get away without having any here. Oh well I suppose I can't hold it against whomever clicked the yikes (or do the moderators roam randomly anyway?) Lets just try to avoid it happening again.

maybe i did get carried away , maybe people shouldnt play with fireworks at this time of year. if people want to post inflametory comments what do they expect, the comment said something about rising to the bait,by certain remarks or comments.why say them when you know what will happen, extremely funny, this discussion should be dropped its to hot to handle. my apologies for rising to the bait,

I'm sorry if I incited violence. Its not my intention to start a flame war.
I did (and still do) mean the ball and chain as a guenuine analogy. Take swinging the ball and chain and smoking. In both cases the person doing it is enjoying themselves. In both cases they are causing harm to those around them. To my mind there is no difference - but I'm guessing to yours there is, tell me what it is.
I'd rather we didn't rubbish each other personally, but tearing each others arguments to shreds is fair game

Well
swinging a ball and chain harms people more directly and we can see the results more immeadably..
That was meant to be a bullet pointed list. But I realised that I was only re iterating the same point
I like the though so I'll leave it

Suppose I were to replace the ball and chain with injecting everyone who doesn't say 'hello' to me on the street with a slow acting poision.
Would it be okay then?

I never said there was any diffenece in outcome, I was just pointing out the differences in method.
