A Conversation for The Great Blackout of 2003
Pennsylvania, oddly unaffected

Being that I live in Pennsylvania and I know how notoriously unreliable our power system is, I was shocked that we didn't lose power during the blackout. I know that people that I talked to that day just kept waiting for our power to go out. 4,000 people in Milford, about half an hour north of me, did lose power but it was no big deal for them. Someone set up a gas-powered generated to keep the one traffic light in town going and the tourists visiting or driving through were confused. The residents they interviewed on the news pointed out that in an average summer they lose power about five times, so this was nothing new for them.

Wow. It's really interesting to see a rural view of the power outage. What the heck do you need electricity on a farm for, anyway? )
