'I am not a fish'? A very astute observation. Dicesne Latinam linguam? Do you speak Latin? Well, I'll wait for Kat or Joe C to welcome you properly, but I'm the head of the Latin department so let me extend a welcome to you as well.
Salve!
(Hello or greetings.)

I've been doing Latin for three years too. Next year I'm going to take the American equivalent of GCSE for it. My tutor tells me not to do Greek, and I probably won't. I'm more interested in Latin for its medieval bits. I was doing this paper on Geoffrey Chaucer for English, and in doing my research every single primary source was in Latin or French. This is what convinced me I was taking the right languages.
Latin's cool! Keep it up!

Hi there
I did GCSE Latin too - loved it! Didn't take it any further because I couldn't see myself using A-level Latin, but it helped me a lot with other languages, and still does.
Anyway, the advice remains the same - wander round, drop into threads, and have fun!

heya!
hmm.. well i will keep it up, but i don't know whether to take it on to A-level. i really don't see myself at that level, but it is gonna be considered.
so hey how is everyone?
oh and what exactly do i have to do, now?

What you need to do now is go back to the main page (link at the top of this thread) and go to your chosen departments. Then introduce yourself in the threads you want to take part in
Oh and I'm Kat by the way, the boss and moderator round here Welcome and I hope you have fun!

Anything else we need to know: I have French to GCSE level, but will not take it for A-level, and so hope to use this to keep the level of French I have in reasonable condition. Plus I want to mess around with these little form thingies .

An excellent reason
Welcome to the Language Thing! I am NOT your host, for that is Kat's job, but I'm sort of the person who stands around looking important and waiting for Kat to tell me to do stuff
The French Department is here - A2658684 - so have a wander over there, and speak, practise and learn at your leisure! Enjoy!

Joe! Honestly
Hey there, I'm Kat, I'll be your host for the duration of this Language Thing Wherever you roam please remember to post a translation in English of your post.
For example:
Ich bin Kat, ich bin eine Berliner!
***
I am Kat, I am a doughnut (brand name)
Have fun

We had such a *long* discussion about the famous Ich bin eine Berliner speech in school the other day... some kids just didn't get it, and the teacher went into this rant about German grammar that lasted for, well, a while.
Fun

Didn't he say'Ich bin ein Berliner?' ( ein=m, eine=f)And I never understood he meant the doughnut, but a citizen of Berlin

Kat - From H2G2 Posted May 27, 2005
He did mean a citizen of Berlin, but at least at the time (I'm not very doughnut-aware) it meant he was a brand of doughtnut I think...or something.

Yeah, he did say 'ein' - my mistake. A Berliner is (still, as I understand it) a type of jelly doughnut. It would sort of be like us going to Boston and saying 'I am a Boston creme doughnut.' According to this teacher of mine (who speaks German) if you wanted to say you were a Berliner you would simply say 'Ich bin ein(e) Berlin.'

Sorry, but that's wrong. Berliner,Berlinerin is a citizen of Berlin, and the word Berliner for the jam-filled doughnut is regional, where I live, they're called Kreppl, another expression is Krapfen. Where I was raised, we called them Berliner ( Pfannkuchen) - Berlin (pancakes).

Hi Paul Where have I seen you before? Lil's Journal, wasn't it?
Anyway, welcome one and all to the marvel that is the h2g2 Language Thing! Do we have a Portugese Department? I believe we do... yes, we do, it's at A3353366. Oh, I see you've already found it Things are a bit inactive around there, I'm afraid, but do feel free to wander around and talk wherever people are!
Kat's going to do her arm-waving thing again when she sees what a good bumbling vicar-type impression I've just done
