A frequent error is that Durham is the UKs third oldest University. As most people should know, however, the UK does not, in fact, comprise England and Wales.....
Oxford, Cambridge, St Andrews, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow (though I could be wrong about the order of those last three), then a gap of about 300 years, _THEN_ Durham.
(St Andrews: What happens when a city fails to enlarge from its medieval size, but the university does. Golf bears the major share of the blame for this)
