Just a short entry on why the quickest way from Derby to Nottinham is via Dunkirk.

Yup like that.

Only one question though. Why in the name of all that is holy did the French want to buy Derby?

smiley - ok Good entry?

It seems to cover the topic of "Unusal suburb names in Derby" fully. Incedently there's a "California" and a "Hollywood" in Birmingham, I wonder where they come from?

Are any of the suburbs twinned to the places they are named after? how old are the areas, are they new estates that were named by town planners? or are they older areas where the unusual names have just grown up.

Anyway these are just ideas... they're usually useful to have.

More importantly can we still offload Derby to the French ? smiley - biggrin

Looks good to me, Kerr.

Short and sweet, just like yourself.

Did I just say that?

Oh, and in answer to Z's (rhetorical?) question, the Hollywood in Birmingham is so named - imaginatively - for a wood of holly trees somewhere around the A38 down there.

The Hollywood in America, by the by, is not named after local Holly nor Woods, but after a holiday home in New York state.

I've often wondered about this, living in Nottingham (but spending a lot of my weekends in Derby at the in-laws). There's a Dunkirk in Nottingham as well. So does the Nottingham (via Dunkirk) bus merely turn off the A52 and take the 'low road' into Nottingham?

Here's the route map for the Rainbow 5 FM:

http://www.trentbarton.co.uk/timetables/times/index.html?rainbow5derby.html

I've mentioned the first time it's recorded Dunkirk was named Dunkirk- 1767. California was named so during the time of the gold rush- I'll make that clearer, New Zealand was so named when the Chandos-Poles starting building on the area, that must have been in the 19th century, I'll try and find a date. So, they're not *old* old names, but they're not 20th century.

None- of the areas are twinned with the places they're named after- they're just suburbs of Derby, and the whole of Derby is twinned with Osnabruck.

Oh, and Blues, I meant Charles I sale of *Dunkirk* back to the French!

B, yes you did smiley - winkeye

Ah. Makes mildly more sense, though having been to Dunkirk (France), not much. It's a dump.

I occasionally made the mistake of catching that bus when I used to go and visit my girlfriend in Derby. It would have been a lot quicker and less trouble free to hijack a milkfloat.

PS: looking at the route, I still don't think that the bus goes through Dunkirk in Derby, rather the one in Nottingham, as it goes down through Chadd, Spondon and Borrowash.

You live near Derby, then? I remember rashly promising to do an East Midlands mini-meet but have been sidetracked afterwards.

Oh well. Maybe it does....

What do people reckon, shall I leave it as it is, or work out if there's a bus that goes around with New Zealand or California on the front, or one that goes through Dunkirk in Derby?

I work in Derby, I live in Burton-on-Trent. A mini-meet would be great...

If you extend slightly northwards, there's several Lincolnshire researchers, most notably Galaxy Babe, that keep failing to organise a mini-meet. smiley - ok

Oh God, leave it as it is.

I'm quite happy to extend it northwards. I live in Nottingham but I work in Loogabarooga. Mina has even threatened to turn up . I suggest in that case we organise a visit to the Galleries of Justice.

I'll leave it, the point about the odd name still stands, as long as the bus isn't actually going to France smiley - laugh

Where were you thinking for a meet? SHoul we move this off to a page of its own, rather than being naughty with the PR thread?

Definitely: I've created a new entry at A1132336, so we'll kick the discussion off there.

My suggestion is to hold it at least few months hence when everyone is back from hols, feeling gloomy cos the nights are drawing in, and in need of libation.

Don't suppose you could offer a bus planner for people who want to see all three places in one day? Might help fill the entry out a bit.

Oh, I'm glad someone has an opinion on 'named for'. We had a brief debate over it on the Subs mailing list a couple of months back and didn't reach any firm conclusions.

It could have something to do with the fact that quite a few of our Subs are Americans, of course...
