Passing through ARDLEIGH on the bus in the late '40s my grandmother always used to remark on JOHNNYBOYS HILL(my name being John, and she always referred to me as JOHNNY BOY.) I worked out later that it was a corruption of JEAN DE BOIS.This was part of the main road to COLCHESTER. I was equally intrigued by the village known as TOOSEY, which turned out to be ST. OSYTH. Thought someone would be interested.
