I was (still) working on a North Yorkshire entry when I realised I had rather a lot to say about Whitby. What do youse reckon?

Nice Entry
Who's this Cook fellah? By far the most famous Whitbyite is the God of Hellfire himself, Arthur Brown.

Good stuff, Bagpuss
Just a couple of minors:
The dates should be written as '657 AD', with the era mentioned for clarity.
'The families mostly no longer rigorously enforce their claims.' - just sounds a little, awkward. Is there a better way of phrasing this?
parked by the habour - harbour
Footnotes 4 and 5 are missing full stops.
I thought there was another typoo somewhere, but I've lost it
Worth mentioning the annual Goth festival that ties in with the Dracula connection?
Nice work, and a pleasure to read

Thanks both.
I've rephrased that a bit, Rich. I'd like to keep a slightly pedantic tone to it because it's a little .
Pinniped - Is that as in "I am the god of hellfire and I bring you fire "? Didn't know he was from Whitby.

That's fine, Bagpuss - I could see what you were trying to say, but it didn't quite make enough sense.
Sorry, the 657AD needs a space to become '657 AD'.
Then, no further comments from me

Yes Arthur Brown is from Whitby:

Many interesting fossils have been found in the Whitby area including entire skeletons of pterodactyls.

OK. You don't think the pteradactyls are worth mentioning?

Bagpuss Posted Jun 4, 2006
Oh, I forgot about that. Was it very near Whitby?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/rocks/downloadwalks/rockydownload.rtf (but that's a file download) if you don't want to do that I will just paste here exactly what it says so you can rewrite it if you wish (it's from the BBC Education website, so a reliable source)
Jurassic 208-145 Million years ago
Although the Jurassic is famous for dinosaurs, most of Britain was covered by sea during the Jurassic, so dinosaur fossils are rare. However, the Jurassic seas were full of life, including ammonites and marine reptiles like Ichthyosaurs and Plesiosaurs. These fossils can be found along the coast near Lyme Regis in Dorset and Whitby in Yorkshire. Jurassic rocks run right across the country between these two localities forming the broad ridges of the Cotswolds which are composed of oolitic limestones deposited in warm shallow seas. Jurassic sediments in the North Sea are the main source for North Sea oil.

ah, I love Whitby. Nice entry
Just a question:
under Synod of Whitby: you wrote >>This decision affected more than just diary manufacturers.<< but I'm confused as to why the date of easter affected them. Did we have 'manufacturers' of dairy products back then? (I'm assuming all this is related to chocolate eggs & bunnies?)
No mention (apart from extremely briefly) of Jet?
And aren't a lot of the external shots for Heartbeat shot up there in Whitby? It's quite well 'preserved' (old fashioned). In fact the town does have an air of the 60s to me. Especially because of the wee shops - among which are sweetshops as I remember then from when I was a wee kid back then (in the 60s)

Bagpuss Posted Jun 5, 2006
That's diary, Sho, though I'm not claiming Filofaxes existed in the dark ages.
"No mention (apart from extremely briefly) of Jet?"
Heartbeat's mainly filmed in and around Goathland, though they have been to Whitby.
Jet does deserve some explanation, and GB, I will get something added about fossils. Later.

Galaxy Babe - eclectic editor Posted Jun 6, 2006
Yes, age hasn't lessened my throwing arm, has it Matt? *smug*
Oops, PR thread, mustn't mess about...sorry Bagpuss

Bagpuss Posted Jun 7, 2006
Anyone throws anything else and I'll break out the s.
New section on "fossils" mentions both the animals and jet.
