A Conversation for Ice Hockey
ICE? Hockey
tsi nobmort Started conversation May 15, 1999
What other kind is there? Yes, I know that some people run around on billiard table smooth
grass fields with strange little "J" shaped sticks hacking at a hard ball and each other's shins
but the word hockey only coincidentally appears in its name. Only people from the Southern
U.S.A., and, obviously, Guide editors feel the need to use the word "ice" when describing what
is REAL hockey. I promise you that no one will be confused if the word "ice" is omitted when
talking about the sport of hockey. (That's the kind played on ice, not the kind played on grass)

I agree on some levels. I am a huge fan of hockey and I don't belive that ICE is needed, but there are other kinds of hockey (and I don't mean filed hockey.) There is roller hockey, and street. I say we change the title to hockey and put a subpoint about street and roller hockey.
Then HOCKEY it is! (not field, not street, not roller, only ice)

I get to play the greatest game in the world tomorrow! We still have ice in canada eh!
(equipment just stinks worse in this heat, damn)

Now that it is all agreed, all that needs to be done is for a Committee to be selected, in order to ratify the terms under which the word Hockey may legally/morally apply. They can then peruse the legislation of the aforementioned agreement on 'Hockey', referring to Ice Hockey as we call it in the UK. The Committee can then simply draw up a proposal that can be set before the 10, 000 researchers, who after debating the next course of action, can take a referendum on the issue, as to wether or not the term Hockey should be submitted to the H2G2 editorial management team for rejection during the next few months.
Right then, agreed.
I thought when those 'j' shaped sticks were used it was called 'shinty'......

but i don't agree. so where does that put all this?

If you'd like to just fill out these forms please Mrs S....
Actually, I don't agree either. Hockey is what girls play. Dropping the word Ice from the North American sport conjurs up images of young girls running around in very short pleated skirts letting all and sundry see their knickers.
I'll get me radiation suit.
Then HOCKEY it is! (not field, not street, not roller, only ice)
mrs. slartibartfast Posted Jun 20, 1999
knickers? sundry? nothing to do with hockey at all. and i won't even discuss radiation suits, that's just silly.
Then HOCKEY it is! (not field, not street, not roller, only ice)

that was a reference to the character on the Fast Show, who says something out of place, then says, " I'll get me coat " and leaves.
Then HOCKEY it is! (not field, not street, not roller, only ice)
mrs. slartibartfast Posted Jun 20, 1999
pardon me then. not being from england, i've never heard of it. had i heard of it, i'm sure i would have thought it quite funny. and this has nothing to do with hockey.
Then HOCKEY it is! (not field, not street, not roller, only ice)

you realize i had to do the hockey bit again, as i find it rather amusing.

Hockey Schmockey Mrs S. I was trying to read your interesting thesis on lentils and have to keep checking your replies. I'll never get to bed at this rate.

Though I do know of the British Version of Hockey, I still feel that it is better known as field hockey. Hockey (in many contries) refers to the stuff played on ice. This is not just because I am some dumb Canadian, but I belive that hockey is growing to be an international sport. Even Israel has its own hockey team. I feel that Ice Hockey is just a redundent statment. Feild hockey, roller hockey, etc. Defines the terms we are talking about.

A few hours ago, I called round to see my nephews. They were in the garden playing with hockey sticks. I realised the oppurtunity and asked them what they were playing. They both replied "Hockey". I told them about the discussion on H2G2 and they said "there is street hockey, ice hockey and grass hockey (field hockey). This is just 'hockey'." So there. Football is football too. As in English Association Football, not gridiron. Australia have 'Australian Rules Football' , which differentiates their game. So Ice Hockey is Ice Hockey.

It looks like all we can say is that North America is differnt than the UK, and Europe. We consider hockey, ice hockey, while you consider hockey field or whatever else. Football to you is soccer to us, and footbal to us is something close to rugby. Cricit to you is... well baseball is the closest thing but not really the same thing. Both can be rather dull. So the only answer is to leave it as Ice Hockey and keep the understanding that for North Americans, adding ice is redundent but because this is international then we should to make the distinction between this and field hockey.(Or any other hockey)
