Harringay Stadium, North London, UK

The closure of the stadium in the 1980s was a heavy blow to the identity of the North London suburb of Harringay. The stadium was a major greyhound and speedway track - opened in 1927, it held over 50,000 people, and was the venue for the Greyhound Derby. There was also had an ice-rink next door - the Harringay Boxing and Ice Skating Arena, which opened in 1936. Several boxing World Title fights were held there, as was The Horse of the Year show for its first ten years, from 1947. It was home to two pretty successful ice-hockey teams - one of which, the Harringay Racers, has been reincarnated and now plays at Alexandra Palace. However, greyhound racing went into a decline than hit its lowest point in the 1980s, and the owners elected to sell the stadium. It was knocked down in 1987, and now there's a Sainsbury's there - and a McDonalds where the ice rink used to be.
