punk kinda started in the late 1960s with the band The Velvet Underground. They are now concidered the first punk band, they in their own words, "hated everything" and "the idea was to take a stab at everything"
They were from the New York Scene, and were at one point managed by Andy Warhol, and they wanted to shock, to be deliberatly offensive.
then, yes, malcom mclaren n vivinne westbrook created the image and lead London misfits into a more artistic way of dressing around 1975 with their shops, "Sex" being the one that the members of the sex pistols found their manager, malcom n their future frontman, Johnny Rotten... then, as u said, it all became a way of life...
