A pleasure to read - I like the style , very easy reading. It's sound advice made entertaining and it's a shame this kind of thing doesn't seem to fit the Edited Guide anymore (saw the Edited Guide Workshop thread).
Did you write it with the Edited Guide in mind? Whether or not, there's plenty room on h2g2 for writing like this.
Next question, did you submit for review for critique or to share?
Third question, this is personal experience and it was the mob hitmen, right?
Enough questions; welcome to h2g2, hope Vladamir turned out to be alive and all fingers are still intact,
Waz

Vladamir remains alive and well, and his trip to the vet tomorrow will be a test for everyone's fingers.
I was not sure whether or not it was suitable for the edited guide, but I think it's the kind of thing people really do need to know. I am keen to hear what people think of it (especially the people who think good things) but I'd like people to enjoy it, if they can.
It is from personal experience, yes, and in the spirit of 21st century gender equality I should say it was hitpersons I was fleeing from. In truth, I'm not sure whether the thing lurking in my front garden was male or female, but I didn't want to be in the same postcode, whatever it was.
Thanks for your response.

the mob going pc, there's a thought. It's about time they got up to date with their Health and Safety policies to be honest. And got a Mission Statement in place.
Your entry read as though you were really wanting to give advice, along with the entertainment. The Edited Guide is the natural home for that. I'm a bit stuck on what to say because I'm not too sure these days how far from the encyclopaedic you can stray and still be within EG guidelines... but I was a little surprised how quickly you were told this one wasn't EG material with no guidance on what sort of tweaks might make it so.
I'm going to ask someone who's a regular in the Edited Guide forums to take a look.
Meanwhile I hope both Vladamir and vet are still fully fit and functional this time tomorrow,
Waz

Ah, should have done this before. EG entries need to be new subjects and there's already a few on moving, like these A571808, A804115. You'd need a new slant to try for the EG.
But outside the EG that's not a factor, and you're free to write your own personal take/opinion/experience without any constraint of guidelines. The less constraint the better, in fact.
Outside the EG you can submit articles to the h2g2 Post (fortnightly community 'newspaper/magazine with a link from h2g2's front page) or you can whistle in the hope of attracting the attention of a couple of the <./>underguide</.>'s Miners who might propose it for inclusion in the UnderGuide.
Complicated place this h2g2 .
To get back to what matters, this was entertaining, I enjoyed the read, the advice comes through well. I did feel, having read your Vladamir journal, that the writing of this was perhaps more constrained than your natural style. I'm curious to know if that's right or not.

"You need to consider purchasing a map, or possibly some sort of British Isles jigsaw puzzle"
and
"....make all this effort pay off, or else you're just a big idiot who's moved half way across the country for no good reason"
Very good.
I especially liked the jigsaw puzzle. Definitely a laugh out loud moment.
And your cynical ending rounded things off perfectly
Thanks for sharing. I very much enjoyed

Hmm... hand't really thought about it, I suppose it was in an way. If you're going to try and be instructive in any fashion then obviously you have to make sure you're not being flippant all the time, but then I think an endless stream of 'jokes' would probably grate anyway, whereas if you have a framework to hang them on then it feels much more like a complete piece. On the other hand, stuff I've written without any particular train of thought, if it works (which it doesn't always, believe me) has a rather different feel, but I think it can read quite well.
I've glanced at the edited guide and it seems anything I know enough to write an entry about (not a lot) has already been covered by someone else. Serves me right for not paying attention at school. Or University.
The vet survived the experience, Vlad, unfortunately, did not. An animal that size can only walk around with hardenning kidneys for so long, and when you weight 3 ounces the treatment options are limited.
That's a bit sombre, maybe I should have started with that bit and moved on. Still got a lot to learn.

Um sorry, clumsily repling to one person at a time. I'm glad you enjoyed it (copy, paste...) France withOmelette aux Fines Herbes
I have rather rudely completely failed to read anyone else's entries yet, so I'd better go and have a look, see what you guys have done.
Bye
