Batteries refreshed after a lengthy layoff Demon Drawer
has returned to writing his pen sketches of great men, women or events of history. Today we
look at a man who started with a vision for the poor in his neighbourhood but established an
internationally recognisable symbol, who was born on this day in 1829.

William Booth 1829-1912

Nottingham builder's son. Teenage revivalist preacher of social
gospel.

Founded Whitechapel Christian Mission, feeding and housing the poor.

Reorganised organisation along military lines, the Salvation Army born

Workers didn't like dour service so introduced brass, clapping and tambourines.

Set up foundation to help children from poor backgrounds.

Family continued in leadership on his death.
