To most animals showing your teeth is a sign of aggression. An angry dog may think you are growling or snarling at it.
Perhaps an important point as many people smile when nervous.
Another point, particularly one children should be taught is that if they want to stroke a dog, to let it sniff their knuckles/back of hand first, this familiarises the dog and fingers are less likely to be bitten.
Dont touch a dog without asking the owner first.
Point number seven I would consider to be the first and most important, if the dogs is threatening you, back away and leave it alone.
