...before I start, I wasn't there, I wasn't French and so on and so forth. However looking at the results http://www.ifes.org/eguide/resultsum/france-pres-res02.htm I would give it a different spin. Le Pen's supporters stayed loyal (and he gained a few votes during the second round). So I wouldn't say that the '...French seem to have voted for Le Pen as protest against Chirac and Jospin' as the people who did vote for Le Pen in the first round also voted for him in the second round. It seems that most people did not want Le Pen, but their votes were split by the many candidates in the first round. In the second round it was either/or and so Chirac was voted in. Well, my interpretation smiley - smiley Until later....
