h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Terri and myself and a friend have been talking about setting up an Emergency Survivor's Fund to help out some of us - any of us - who happen to be in dire financial straits. A sort of mutual aid society. An account will have to be set up and we have to reach agreement on our policy regarding disbursements. What I want to know, is anybody else interested in this? The details we'll have to arrange by email, not here on h2g2. Anyone who wishes to contact me ... [email protected] and you can find the address on my upage as well.

Is anyone gonna feel comfortable asking for it?

My earnings are zilch at the mo, I rely on Moonglum and hes not a survivor, so I'm not sure it would work?

If I had right now ,it would have go to my sisiter & kid to help with their bad fortune, they are still needing basics.

It sure does s*ck being broke... I haven't got much myself but I'd sooner share what I do have than see someone I care about suffering.

Asking for it feels worse than the need itself if that is possible. Especially when people say no,when it cannot be helped both feel doubly awful.

I know some do not have family which can make it worse.
There was a time I had to ask ,I had family, but no connection or help from them. I recieved more of an hysterical lecture of horrors. It was easier to ask strangers, organizations.

Does anyone speak/read French here? I have a long shot of an idea, but french is neccesary.

I'll bet Will could, after an afternoon's reading And I know he has friends who can.

Please don't worry about it, the French bit isn't necessary; but the sentiments behind the effort are greatly appreciated Abbi.; I wanted to email you earlier on this, but time & strange circumstances did not permit.

Those of us who are most closely involved in this project are in contact by other, less public ways now & I think it might be time to transfer to those methods for discussing this; m***y is a dodgy subject at the best of times; and this isn't the best of times, at least for me.

General comments about the principle behind the possibility would be greatly welcomed; but no "signing-up" bit on here is my opinion. It is fairly easy to find out an email of anyone who is in a position to divulge more details.

I have bonded well with some of the survivors group and would happily help them out money wise, as one person here can testify, although that offer didn't even get a thanks. However, I would not wish to be a member of a club thing which gives money out to anyone in the group, regardless of whether I even know them or not.

My earlier point of I do not earn, any money would be coming from Moonglum, wasn't even commented on, thanks for the feedback. Moonglum isn't even a member of the survivors group, I wanted to question the validity of that. I guess the lack of reply has answered that one.

But Moonglum and myself discussed sending money to someone who we knew needed it, and he was happy to.

I guess from the lack of comment I am not welcome in this forum.

I do not think that is intended Kaz. I can only speak for myself though.

I know how hard it is to ask repeatedly for money for my family when I do not work. My hubby works hard and there is not enough to go around everywhere I see need.

I hope someone knows what is happening with Terri. I emailed 2 people per her request but have heard nothing back.

Ignore me, stroppy cause of health problems, new stuff to deal with.

I still stand by what I said though about happy to help some people, but couldn't help everyone. And is it even proper when the money would be coming from Moonglum, who isn't even a survivor?

Pillowcase, there's no way I could participate in such a fund. My disability income is very limited. It's a nice idea, I just can't do it.

Hello Everybody! Kaz, you're certainly welcome here. I would have commented if I was online earlier but this is the first time since I posted that I came online.

Basically a friend and I have been discussing the possibility of this. The way we figured is that contributions are welcome from non-Survivors *and* Survivors. And we're not going to ask a thing from people who don't have some money to spare. And as for who gets paid ... the way I figured it, is that we get a main body of people who can afford to pay a ... I would have it yearly ... small minimum fee, like say $10 per year or so to be 'members' and these 'members' can decide who should get the mone ... we can talk among ourselves about whom we think need help the most ... and the money needn't go only to other people who are 'members'. I would like it if we co-ordinated our efforts with this group here on h2g2 but it would certainly be necessary that 'fund business' not be done here on h2g2, but privately through email. Which is why I gave my email address and asked people to email me (thanks Abbi, I got your email and will respond soon!)

But the thing can only work if there's enough *interest* among us, which it looks to me there is, but *backed up* by the (financial) ability. I know I can do something, because I do work, and right now I have quite a number of projects in the pipeline.

And yes, I can read and write French.

I was thinking tha perhaps services could be found for someone who does not speak French and is consequently isolated in that way. I think there is surely help available in that size of town. The language barrier is quite a problem. It restricts knowledge of what's available out there in emergency services to a person.

Willem, just managed to send you a long email.

Abbi, finally managed to view yours, most frustrating, I could see you had sent something but couldn't access it! I will have to reply tomorrow, sorry, brain & body are in a state of shutdown. In the meantime, please please do not worry, especially about the French bit, I have found someone to help with this, he is also helping someone else in a very practical way. I will not go into further details. I am becoming very, very concerned about private stuff involving money being discussed on a public forum, personal things are going to play a part & I repeat, it should be discussed in more private ways.

This all reinforces the humiliation of being forced into doing this. I hate it. I absolutely bloody hate it.

Kaz, re; post 11. This is me you are referring to. Your email was sent to another address which I do NOT want to reveal on here, I only found it yesterday, I have emailed you on this. Please do not let circumstances of timing & technology & possibly my naivety prejudice you to the idea in principle; but it is getting rather too personal in a public place. My fault I know. Only bloody desperation made me do this; this is the whole point.

Quite apart from anything else, the Survivors group could be targeted by just the very sort of people who have created a need for such a group. What a horrible thought. I for one, am feeling concerned about this.

And tired.I am trying my best to keep a rather too large number of balls inthe air; juggling priorities is not easy.

OK, I am unsubbing now. This does not in anyway mean I do not want to continue with the project; far from it, as anyone in email contact with me realises. Maybe I am just being paranoid, but as they say, discretion is the better part of valour.

If we do this right, it will happen, but in an organised way & the principle can still be discussed on here; plus obviously the support group which is absolutely essential.

OK then, I ask that any further discussion of this take place by email. I'm not paranoid about it, because we're here in a group ... when we're together, we're strong and needn't fear a thing ... but just because the details, financial and personal, are private and sensitive matters not to be flaunted in public here. But I have no problem with discussing *general* principles, i.e. nothing that touches one of us *personally*, here. The very personal stuff, though ... email!
