If the universe is infinite, then im "a" center, 21+4^1+8+9=42 Posted May 5, 2003
The real God might just be like a big lumpy sack of potatoes and doesnt actually do anything at all, he just created the universe, now there are lots of impersonators, i think we should have some real evil one who is actaully satan or somebody, that travelled through time doing all the things that make humans lack imagination. for instance, he could have writen the ten commandments, so that people obbeyed the rule of, i shall not worship any fake idils, this would mean the humans could only worship one god and not create others with there imagination, this bad guy, could also have come to our time and created silicon chips, computers, tv's and reallity shows go get rid of imagination.

We have three 'evil' thingies so far
Gill Bates (for the silicon)
Kilroy (for the reallity tv shows' day time tv)
Jimbob (probably a bad god impersonator, but not confirmed)

Sorry to butt in, I've been away for a while working.
My daughter is four and she accepted at first that all the Santa's were the real one. Recently though she has decided that they are all Santa's helpers and the real Santa only comes out on Christmas Eve. Eventually she will learn something else (that we won't mention in case any preschoolers are reading this). Could this be the same with God? He's all over the place one minute, then he's just in one special place and then, well, he's nowhere.
The 10 commandments could have just been written by Moses, a politician with a career to think about...

Sorry. I've just been struck down for committing blasphemy.
Anyway. One of the best quotes I've encountered around H2G2 is that "religion is simply crowd control" so God is an idea; an 'imagined' being. Therefore, as long as he exists in the mind of just one person (and the same could be said of my daughter's faith in the big red present giver (and credit taker) Santa) then the imagination is safe. The problem is, people who actually believe that God/Santa is real don't realise they are using their imagination, so think there is none. It's like a philosopher's version of Chicken Licken.
And I'm not even drunk tonight!

After having many cups of tea and lots of sleep I still can't quite follow all that....
There are multiple gods in the story already. We've sort of mentioned the imagination bit when Oddy said that the god in the pub was only god if you thought of him as an old man who likes his ale; so perhaps we could develop that further. I can't remember chicken Licken, but I do remember not liking it...

Chicken Licken was an apocryphal bird who, when hit on the head by a falling leaf decided the sky was falling in. S/he told everyone else and they all believed the sky was falling in. Pretty good lesson in a: not jumping to conclusions with only the smallest piece of information, and b: not taking someone elses word about something as important as the sky falling in.
Key: Complain about this post
