I hope this question is at the right place here - but which dictionary would you recommend for non-native-speakers?
Or which one in general?
(before I have a good dictionary I can't join the club I suppose?)
Have a nice day

I'd say Chambers 21st Dictionary, to go with the online version.

Of course there is always Leo: http://dict.leo.org/
As for French dictionaries I tend to prefer the Robert, which seems more serious than Larousse. Of course it doesn't have the pictures

Online I use the leo - and somewhere I have got an old version of the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, but it is time to get something that is updated

Longman's is, I think, designed for foreign learners.

You might want a more up-to-date version than that.

well, when I buy one I will look for the latest version
and knowing me, one won't do anyway - so will have to look around (I would like an etymological dict as well - but it will take time to afford it)

Longman's not etymological. Chamber's is.
which dictionary?
Mr_Jeffers Posted Jun 14, 2007
Chamber's is by far my favourite. My dad's copy is ancient and has got all those lovely Spenserian words in like 'ythundered', which scored me several million points in Scrabble.
May I join the Dictionary readers too please?
