I love this entry! smiley - biggrin

But that aside, I read Beowulf for the first time last year, the translation by Seamus Heaney. I absolutely loved it - it's the perfect epic, and I wouldn't be surprised if this poem started off the whole epic/fantasy culture we know today. It's got dragons, monsters, fighting, honour, a lovely story and a great ending (if not sad). I have declare it my favourite poem ever, taking over the Raven!

I agree that Heaney's translation has much to recommend it, not least that (in some editions) it also contains the Old English text. Reading it in Old English really should be everyone's goal.smiley - biggrin

I'm going to have to swot up on the Olde English first though - sometimes I have problems speaking the modern version....smiley - tongueout
