Agatha Christie's famous detective, Hercule Poirot, performed 12 self-imposed 'labours' when he decided to retire (I don't think he ever *did* retire completely). These can be found in 'The 12 Labours of Hercule' (I think).
The creators of Asterix the Gaul also gave their hero 12 tasks to perform, which he did with great success in 'The 12 Tasks of Asterix'.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
