That's him in the pod that crashes in2 his house isn't it? He does it 2 save the girl, who will then never meet him, and then consequently never die.

You're almost right, though...

It isn't a "pod" that crashes into his house, it's a jet engine. He gets into bed just before the engine hits his house (instead of going out and listening to Frank like he did the first time) - this consequently results in his death, and hence the world is saved (and that girl, if you like).
