As a visitor to the UK I've managed to figure out the reason for the name *Zebra Crossing* (and even *Badger Crossing*!). I now know the name of and can devise the reason for the title *Pegasus Crossing*.
How on earth were the names *Pelican* and *Toucan* crossings devised?

Pelican - PEdestrian LIght CONtrolled (yeah, I know it's an O not an A).
Toucan I'm not quite sure about.

Perhaps it's the maximum number of bevvies one can consume before safely crossing.

Is that cycling or walking?
Best guess is that it's a laboured pun on the fact that TWO sorts of transport (pedestrians and cyclists) CAN use it.
