Mike Hailwood was the greatest British motorbike rider of all time, rated by many as the greatest in the world.
14 wins on the Isle of man was a record that stood for many years. More remarkable was that he had a long break in the middle for his farily successful car racing carear. His two comeback years, underlined the huge ability of the man, winning a 500 Suzuki and of course on the beautiful Ducati.
His record was broken by the greatest road racer of all time, Joey Dunlop (see edited entry), who by his death in 2000 held 24 wins, and the record for most 100mph + laps. He prepared his own bikes and the island is not the same without the sight of the yellow helmentand number 3 bike of Yer Maun. He gave much of his time outside the sport to charity.
