Though your comments about Greg Lemond are true, Lance Armstrong has to be rated the greatest ever.
Like Lemond, Lance had a major setback, only in his case it was testicular cancer which spread to his brain and lungs.
He suffered through bouts of chemotherapy to come back and take four consecutive Tours de france and most likely another this year.
Having said that, my personal favourite is Marco Pantani.

Agreed about Lance. Though there were always rumblings and rumours that the drug regimen that he took to cure the cancer somehow assisted his weight and muscle distribution, and hence made him a better cyclist. Though I think we'll all agree that if you're going to cheat, nearly dying of cancer to do it is a quantum leap ahead of popping a few steroids or EPO injections. So it has to be sour grapes really.

Lance has had little comptetion, personally, I rate Indurain as the best I've seen, but I'm from an era before Hinault and Mercx. LeMond to me was the come back king and more than anybody else has changed the sport of cycling and became bigger than the sport

In many ways, Armstrong's lack of competition has made his ascendancy over the sport even more remarkable, though. With little or no challenge, many in his position would have rested on their laurels. Armstrong now essentially races against himself, which is one of the most difficult things to do.

Who amongst us will deny that we want to see him make it five this year?

I'm sure Lance will make it five this year, but if Pantani smiley - pirate
joins Ullrich in the Bianchi team as is rumoured then I don't
think he'll find it quite so easy as in previous years.

That may be so, but I have a feeling that both Ullrich and Pantani have seen there best days, now...

I shall be rooting for Lance anyway, and David Millar as well.

I just wish the TV coverage was back on Channel 4, so I could follow what is going on from day to day smiley - sadface

Yeah - being back in my own flat (for the time being), I have at least got access to sky, so I'll be able to follow it on Eurosport, I suspect...

But I did like Channel 4's coverage.

Can I get the C4 TdF music on CD?

Is there a Great Sporting Themes album?

Cyclists

Post 10

GreyDesk

I some how doubt it. I've just been ploughing through loads and loads of sites out there that archive TV theme music, with not a mention of the Tour de France theme smiley - sadface

Thanks for your effort. I might have to write a letter to Phil Ligget or whatever his name is.

By opinion, the 5 should take the cricket. 4 gets cycling back. However IMHO the are few things better than listerning to David Duffield on Eurosport witter on for a 7 hour mountain stage.

If we could bet the orignal C4 (circa 1990) music with flashing jerseys title squence + the "Two pork pies and starwberry yogurt" "But what about by cycling Weekly?" + the PG tips chip adds all on a video, it would be great.

It was called "Tour de France" by Kraftwerk, released in 1984.

Apparently.

Hmm, it's a very ofdd mix of said track then. Possibly one o the less common Francois Kervorkian dance mixes...

If it helps I'll bang all the cversions I have of the track (about five or six), and see if i can spot which one it is...

Good plan, Blue.

I've listened to a 29 second blast of it on Amazon and it didn't sound at all like the thing I'm sure we all love.

I'll be honest and say that I don't believe it is Tour De France by the 'Werk, a track I have known and loved since it's initial release.

It certainly may be Pete Shelley, or as suggested by that link, an 'middle eight' from an old Buzzcocks song...

... but not commercially released.

I suppose there's a buc to be earned by someone who wants to put this sort of stuff together on an album ...

BBC Test Match Special (carribean rythym)
BBC Formula 1 )Fleetwood Mac minus Stevie Nicks)
Channel 4 Tour de France

erm ... Ask h2g2?

Test Match Special was Soul Limbo by Booker T and the MG's, of Green Onions fame. Not one of their more common tracks, but easy enough to find.

And I'm sure that both it and The Chain (Fleetwood mac's F1 opus), have featured on limitless BBC compilations.
