A Conversation for Great Comedy Acts

Rains - Wondering where time's going and why it's in so much of a hurry!

Am I the only person who misses the absolute genius of Morecombe and Wise? The absurdity of the above quote (about an ambulance with sirens going, in case you're not familiar with it) is both unexpected and brilliant. Their films weren't that funny, though.

Similar word tricks were done by the Two Ronnies in the amazing "Fork Handles" (or "Four Candles") sketch to similar, hilarious effect. And by The Goons, although with a touch more absurdity but no less inventiveness.

The best humour for me is always verbal, be it puns or word-plays or just the unexpected, and there has to be a certain rapport between the comedians. The Marx brothers wouldn't be the same without that and neither would any of the other teams I've mentioned.

EncyBass-: Not going to be around much next week, cos I've got a new job...

I always loved the "Plays what Ernie wrote". The Foreign Legion one (with the way over the top death scene) is a personal favourite.

That was a good one. I also liked the one with Napoleon and Wellington (with Vanessa Redgrave, if I remember rightly) - very silly indeed.

I've never seen any of these, but I was cracking up reading the descriptions you wrote. They sound great!

Oh Eccentra

You poor deprived soul!!

You mean you've never seen the dancing girls with Angela Rippon the last in the line?

You've never seen Eric and Ernie preparing breakfast to the tune of the stripper?

You've never seen Andre Previn trying to get his appearance fee?

Or Singing in the rain?

Sigh.

You MUST get a video or dvd - fortunately they're available from the BBC

OOps is that advertising? will I get moderated? (painful that - wiggles black framed spectacles)

If you like Eric and Ernie I highly recommend The Play What I Wrote, which is a sort of tribute play to Morcambe and Wise, only it is about a double act, one of whom wants to do the tribute and the other wants to put on his own play. It is absolutely hilarious, slips in a good few Morcambe and Wise jokes, has a different special guest every night and goes at a hundred miles an hour. Oh, and it has the joke in the title in it too. smiley - smiley
