Not Ready for Prime Time Players

For consistency over a long time span, you have to include the Not Ready for Prime Time Players from Saturday Night Live. The original members were more talented, in my opinion, but that may because I'm getting older and nostalgic.

Dan Ackroyd, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, Eddie Murphy, Dana Carvey, Lorraine Newman, Dennis Miller.......all were consistently funny. The guests were legion and would do very surprising things on SNL that they wouldn't have done anyplace else.

the original 'players' did things no one had ever seen before on television, they were a cultural phenomenon. the first season was during my college years, living in a dorm. our wing was pretty friendly, our doors were open alot of the time (unless the room was being filled with smoke) and it was amazing on a saturday night--poke your head out the door and you heard SNL echo from room-to-room down the hallways.
both on saturday night and sunday (more about that later) in the mid-70's, it was not uncommon to find students coming home from the watering holes around 11 PM, stereo systems up and down the floor being turned down, then back up, doors closing around 1 AM.
and i'll bet the pizza-and-beer place down the street that delivered to the front desk did some good business saturday night, too!

oh, and some of us would just stay home saturday nights, for carol burnett at 10 PM, a female comedic icon with a standout ensemble and a show that, while taped, included 'live' moments when the characters went off-script (often some of the best moments) or simply breaking character completely, and busting out in laughter at the absurbity of it all. often, shows would be pieced together--5 minutes from what was done one week, ten from another...it wasn't topical, like SNL, but it definitely was comedy.

I've been trying to decide what my all time favorite skit/character was.....and I can't do it! That's how good they were. I loved Roseann Roseanna Danna (sp?) I laugh just thinking about her. But Emily Latella was just as good. And do you remember the Point/Counterpoint takeoff that Dan Ackroyd and Jane Curtin did? No matter what she said, he would turn to her and say, "Jane, you ignorant slut!" smiley - laugh Then there was the Garret Morris bit where he was the Cuban baseball player. And Chevy Chases doing Gerald Ford. And Belushi as the Samurai and the killer bee. smiley - laughsmiley - laugh Or Eddie Murphy as Buckwheat. smiley - ok

roseanne roseannadanna i believe. jodan, wherefore is the entry? emily litella's 'never mind' and chevy chase's double takes. even now, IF i watch SNL, i watch 'weekend update'... the 'killer bee' sketch with elliot gould where they all just gave up and walked off, dan ackroyd's 'bass-o-matic' and the saumrai restaurant...'two chezbuggies, pepsi, no coke.' paul simon. steve martin doing 'king tut' and it went gold. the bill murray/gilda radner silent scenes where they dance. the rolling stones show.

Dan Akroyd and Steve Martin as "two wild and crazy" swingin' Czechoslovakian brothers. I LOVE that!

I just watched a rerun of an old SNL with Gilda Radner and Steve Martin doing the silent dance thing. It was too funny. Every couple of minutes after some serious ballroom moves, Steve Martin would bust out in his King Tut sort of moves. Comedy Central shows the old SNLs a lot.
