The King's Head
Recumbentman Started conversation Mar 21, 2006
There must be hundreds of pubs called "The King's Head". It's an interesting name for a pub in the 17th century, considering that the King was beheaded in 1649. Did the innkeeper want to show his loyalty (the King's head of this country) or his republican sympathies (we'll have the King's head); or was it a theme appealing to the punters' semse of the gruesome (try our special: King's head with turnips)?

I thought that was curious too - it is called the King's Arms now - one wonders what other body parts might be in the future names of the pub Perhaps in 30 years or so we'll have The King's Ears?
